As educators, part of our job is to create an atmosphere of learning and calm. If the room is too noisy with many distractions, our students will have trouble learning to the best of their ability.
I have found the best way to approach this is to teach directly with lessons, stories, and visual aids. I’ve included some of the best books for this task, as well as a free set of posters to reinforce listening skills (see the end of this post).
BOOKS TO REINFORCE CALM & LISTENING IN THE CLASSROOM
Book #1 - Calm Down Time by Elizabeth Verdick
This story is for young children who need simple tools to release big emotions appropriately.
Book #2 - The Lemonade Hurricane by Licia Morelli
This is a sweet story about Henry, who is always active like a hurricane, and how his sister helps him find the calm within himself.
Book #3 - Hands Are Not For Hitting by Martine Agassi
This story helps to remind students that hitting is never okay, with tips for teachers and caregivers included.
ALPHABET COUNTDOWN
A fun activity as we end the school year is to review our printing - with a fun twist!
Students practice a letter each day, self-assess and edit, practice letter sound knowledge and then make a funny picture out of each letter! Super engaging and students love sharing their pictures. Click HERE to check it out!
POSTERS TO TEACH LISTENING SKILLS
In a classroom setting, we often find success reinforcing basic listening skills through posters on the wall. This way, we can review them each day to reinforce behaviour expectations. We can also refer to them during our lessons, if needed. These are the ones I use in my classroom:
