How do you celebrate your students' accomplishments at the end of the school year? In addition to the field trips, summer parties and special days, I like to give out certificates to each student. While in years past I took some time to decide which award to give each student, I now do it a bit differently in two ways. Keep reading to find out what they are, and don't miss the free certificates at the end of this post!
END OF YEAR AWARD TOPICS
First, I decided to move away from academic awards and replace it with growth mindset and character awards. This means rather than a "amazing writer" award, I'd choose "amazing friend" award, or "amazing problem solver" award. Here's a list of some of the awards I would choose:
perseverance
citizenship
inspiring others
positive attitude
determination
loyal friend
hard worker
problem solver
cooperation
creativity
encouraging others
independent worker
organization
best effort
humor and fun
growth mindset
kindness
helpfulness
END OF YEAR: STUDENTS CHOOSE!
The second thing I changed about handing out end of year award made a huge difference: I decided to let students choose their own award! This had such a big impact: it meant students were rewarded for things they valued in their own accomplishments. This told me a lot about what my students were most proud of so that I could reinforce the value of it. I would even make new certificates if they wanted something not on my list of choices. Also, multiple students could choose the same award if they wanted to.
END OF YEAR WRITING: Seasonal Print n Go
In my class, we keep writing to the very end! I keep the kiddos motivated by using seasonal writing topics that they are excited to write about. Here is one example that helps me fill my writing centers every year. Click HERE to see more pictures!
END OF YEAR WRITING: Early Finishers
In my class, I always have to be ready for those early finishers, especially at the end of year. The best solution I've found is to give students a workbook to keep in their desks or cubbies. They know to grab it to work on any time they are finished early. The best part is the high engagement because they can choose any page in the workbook. I have these for end of year, and also each month of the year. All no-prep, and completely independent so I can focus on teaching rather that being interrupted by early finishers.
